Why puppies need training
Puppies arrive with strong instincts and no understanding of how to live in a human world. They explore by biting, mouthing and chewing on our stuff. They love people and jump up to get close to our faces. Children are closer in size to them and may be treated as littermates—jumping, chasing nipping…. They potty away from their sleeping area, but every other spot is fair game. When we walk them, they pull us around the neighborhood.
Puppies will not outgrow these behaviors unless we teach them what we DO want. In fact, lack of training is the biggest reason our shelters are filled to capacity. Puppies need our help!
They can learn to do all of the things we want and refrain from doing the naughty stuff—but we have to show them what we want, and do so with patience and consistency.

Young puppies are awesome learners—as long as the training methods are positive, reinforced and scientifically sound. Learning between 3 and 14 weeks of age will have a lasting effect on your puppy’s behavior. At SR K9 Genie, we use cutting edge methods to teach your puppy to be successful. Your puppy will learn: to chew on approved toys only; to keep four on the floor when greeting; to walk on a loose leash. We’ll teach recall, sit, and settle. With a little training and encouragement, your puppy will become an amazing adult dog…that you can take anywhere because he has amazing manners!
Remember, many adult behavior problems can be prevented or reduced through appropriate and thorough socialization.

Our Karen Pryor Academy Start-Right Preschool program will take the frustration out of living with a young puppy!
First up: Socialization and Foundation Skills
Puppies might worry about novel items or noises in the environment. Consider noisy trash trucks, scary dogs, larger than life people, screeching children, big horses….
Puppies can be socialized fairly easily (depending on the puppy) up to about 14 weeks. It is not impossible to socialize later, but it is much harder. Socialization takes many forms and it is the most important thing we can work on with a pup between 4 and 14 weeks as they are very open to new experiences during this time.
Puppy is not the only learner here. You will learn how to train your puppy gently, but effectively, and how to help him cope with new sounds and experiences that may concern him. We pay extra attention to solving issues before they are practiced and become habits.
Vaccinate your Puppy against Behavior Problems
Problem behaviors are the number one reason puppies are relinquished to shelters. Our Puppy Preschool program will vaccinate your puppy against behavior problems. We will help you prime your puppy to grow into a calm, confident adult.

What: Five hours of in person private coaching for handler and puppy
Typically, the first series of Puppy Start-Right Training builds on foundation behaviors, puppy management and problem solving.

Positive reinforcement focuses on teaching a dog what to do, instead of telling him what not to do.
